NINETEEN

I had planned a quiet evening of taking Harry out for her walk, then reading for a while. The business of the book, of trying to tell you about the book, John, has taken a toll on me. All of it being more of the things that a logical man cannot put into order. But I have been trying.”

I poured coffee into three cups and for the second time that morning set the sugar and the creamer on the table. He kept talking as I sliced Miss Perry’s pound cake she kept baking for us and put a small plate in the center of the table. There was no room for formalities. We would just have to share. Then I took my seat. We were crowded, the three of us, but it made no nevermind. John and I were seated close together, and Doc had put his long legs out in front of him, leaning back in the little chair as best he could. He stirred cream into his coffee, took a sip, and continued.

“Just as Harriet and I were turning the corner last night, making our nightly circle around the block, I heard footsteps. I was being followed again. Then as rational a man as I may be—not given, I believe, to misplaced fears and wild imaginings—I was overcome with a foreboding that a lot more was in danger. It was a feeling that crawled up my spine like nothing I ever remember and one I do not wish to repeat. I walked along a little further and paused, and with the pause the footsteps behind me would stop altogether. I began to hurry Harriet along. Only instead of hurrying her home, I hurried her toward the office. Had I thought about it more clearly, I would have taken her home and gotten the car. Harriet has those short, stubby little legs and those long ears, and neither one makes for quick travel. She tried her best to keep up with me, but I was so caught up, so suddenly desperate, that I picked her up and began to walk faster and faster to the corner.”

“You didn’t!” I knew that running was okay for Doc, but carrying Harry? I had pulled her along on her leash before, and she was solid dog. Harry was well fed. Harry was a bit paunchy.

“More than that, the closer I was to the office, it seemed the more compelled I was to run. Before long I was running with her as hard as I could. When I arrived, I was so winded that I almost dropped poor Harry, but I managed to fumble for the keys, open the door, and at least get us inside, where we both collapsed.” He picked up a slice of the pound cake and took a bite. “She is no worse, but I have to say I feel a little shaken by the evening still. Although Miss Perry’s pound cake does help the recovery process.”

“Please, Doc—last night!”

“Yes, yes, I’m moving on.
